Federal Cuts may impact housing subsidies

Both the house and Senate budget proposals are projecting cuts to housing subsidies such as Section 8. According to the U-T article copied here, San Diego Already subsidizes federal grant money and we still have a 15 year waiting list, with the last new vouchers granted in 2022. More that 180,000 San Diego county households are on that waiting list for housing assistance today.

Many PLWH are dependent upon housing subsidies such a as Section 8 or HOPWA and both have waiting lists measured in decades. Given the high cost of housing in San Diego, these cuts may have an impact on our communities. If congress goes forward with significant cuts, this could lead to the need for more state and local funding just to maintain the current number of vouchers, and at worst could result in fewer vouchers being available.

We will continue to monitor this disturbing trend, but we recommend you reach out to you elected officials to let them know what the impact would be to you or those you care about. You can find your representatives by clicking here.
