N.Ex.T

Nutrition and Exercise Training

for HIV Long Term Survivors

The 2024 NExT program is now open for registration!

For 2024, the NExT program will be consulting with HIV researchers and local physicians to better measure the performance of the program. The goal is to:

  • Provide metter insight to participants on the results they have achieved

  • Determine the impact of the NExT program and use data collected to improve the program

For 2024, there will be a $25 monthly fee which covers nutrition, exercise and progress assessment. We will recognize those who attend all classes and assessments with a monthly reward of $25. All for a fraction of what a gym would cost!

The NExT nutrition and exercise program started with an observation about my own journey with HIV and Aging. My health was declining, partly due to side effects from the older HIV drugs. I had gained weight and was out of shape. I decided it was time to make a change.

I cut out the things in my diet that were not helping me be healthy; carbs, sugar, salt and fat. I focused on good protein and a balanced diet and started working with a trainer. Within 6 months I had lost 25 pounds and within a year my numbers were better than I remember them ever being.

NExT provides the pieces necessary for others to take control of their health and form the habits that can make a difference in your lives.

Nutrition

We partner with Mama’s Kitchen to provide nutrition classes and individual dietary consulting to participants. For 2024, we will focus on how diet impacts common health issues affecting people living with HIV

Group Strength Training

Participants may choose to join a 6 month series of weekly strength training classes. Working with Nick Kempker, Personal Trainer, you will begin each session with stretching out and then go through a series of exercises designed to build strength, mobility and improve balance. Each exercise may have both a basic and advanced version to allow each participant to advance as they are ready. Participants will undergo periodic assessments to determine progress towards their goals.

T’ai Chi

Working with Harsha Dandamudi, T’ai Chi Master, participants may choose to join twice weekly half hour sessions focused on learning the basic forms of the Yang form of T’ai Chi. This will develop stregth, focus and balance. Participants will undergo periodic assessments to determine progress towards their goals.
